Bay Gather, Together

Type: Public

Location: Zhanjiang, Guangdong, China

Site Area: 716m2

Building Area: 310m2

Guitou Village is located in the Dolphin Bay area of Zhanjiang. It is a traditional coastal fishing village built along the sea, where fishing culture and temple-based beliefs are still well preserved. In recent years, the village has begun to develop eco-tourism and promote dolphin conservation, gradually revealing its unique cultural and ecological value to the wider public.

The proposed Community Living Room is sited in front of the village cultural building. It is intended to serve daily activities and social interaction for villagers, while also acting as a window through which local culture can be presented to visitors.

The building unfolds as a corridor-like structure following the edge of the site, maximizing views toward the coastline. The seaward side accommodates flexible public spaces for exhibitions and community events, while the village-facing side houses storage, restrooms, and a viewing platform with lighthouse-like symbolism. The roofscape steps in height, allowing abundant natural daylight into the interior.

Constructed with a timber structure, the building features red brick faƧades paired with a dark grey metal roof, echoing the traditional red-brick and grey-tile architecture of the village. Light, warm, and inviting, the project introduces a new sense of intimacy and belonging to the fishing village, becoming a contemporary public space that connects the local community with the outside world.
