The Blue Fan Respite

Type: Public

Location: Shanghai

Building Area: 150m2

Located in Minhang District, an area known for its cultural depth and active community life, this project reflects the district’s evolving identity through a bold yet purposeful design. The building appears as a sculptural object within the park, distinguished by its vibrant blue façade and a form inspired by a folded hand fan. More than a visual landmark, it enhances the sense of arrival and enriches the visitor’s journey through the landscape.

The building is conceived as a public amenity, providing essential facilities such as restrooms, event spaces, information areas, and a small library. Its expressive architecture also functions as a wayfinding beacon, guiding visitors while encouraging interaction with both the building and its surroundings. The design establishes a strong connection between people, architecture, and nature.

Community engagement is central to the project. Flexible spaces support a range of activities, while a community garden offers opportunities for gathering and shared use. A rainwater collection and reuse system further reinforces sustainability, enabling creative and practical engagement with natural resources.

Architecturally, the design is structured around a rational 7×10-meter grid, ensuring efficiency and clarity. Folded spatial sequences create transitions between intimate and open areas, adding rhythm and flow to the experience. The uplifting roofline defines the building’s silhouette while supporting environmental performance.

Ultimately, the project serves as a civic landmark that blends art, functionality, and sustainability, contributing a meaningful public space to Minhang’s park landscape.
