Space is not created, but revealed through intervention.

Located in Hengshiji Village, Sanzao Town, Jinwan District, Zhuhai, China, the project transforms two traditional stone houses positioned between community life and the surrounding landscape. Facing structural aging, limited space, and changing functional needs, the design explores a rural regeneration approach that balances heritage preservation with contemporary transformation.

Under the concept of “Renewing Old Stone, Reshaping Life,” the project introduces new forms of public life into the existing architectural fabric, transforming the stone houses into a multifunctional space for community activities, cultural exhibitions, and social interaction.

The design originates from the existing stone walls. Through dismantling, reclaiming, and reusing original materials, stone is transformed from a structural element into a spatial interface, forming a dialogue with concrete and contemporary construction methods. Rather than preserving the old as a static object, the project allows historical memory to continue through a renewed architectural language.

Spatially, “architectural gaps” are introduced between existing volumes, creating spaces inspired by the natural crevices of stone formations. Light enters through these openings, revealing the relationship between solid masses and voids, and enriching the experience of the interior.

With stone, concrete, and metal forming a restrained material palette, the project creates a balance between solidity and lightness, tradition and intervention. Through minimal yet meaningful transformation, the abandoned stone houses are reimagined as a shared cultural space that reconnects local memory, community life, and contemporary rural experience.
