Water Essence, Heritage in Transition

Type: Landscape

Location: Shanghai

Building Area: 8,250m2

The Weixing Village Entrance Landscape is deeply informed by the cultural and geographical context of Jinshan District, where water towns, agriculture, and everyday life have long been shaped by rivers. Inspired by poetic imagery from the Tang dynasty Bozhouge, the project reflects the quiet, contemplative relationship between people and nature that characterizes Jiangnan water-town culture.

Located beside the Maowei River in eastern Jinshan, the project reimagines the village entrance as a bridge rather than a conventional gate. The bridge functions as a spatial threshold, reconnecting the village with the river and revitalizing the surrounding landscape. This approach strengthens the continuity between natural and built environments while re-establishing the historical bond between daily life and water.

Drawing from traditional elements such as stone bridges, canals, and vernacular architecture, the design interprets these features through a contemporary lens. The bridge entrance abstracts the reflected image of historic stone bridges using locally sourced bricks in varied tones, evoking layers of rooftops, stone textures, and water reflections. Influenced by Impressionist ideas of fragmented color, the design allows cultural heritage to be expressed in a modern yet respectful way.

Surrounding the bridge, a sequence of landscaped gardens unfolds in fluid, water-like forms. Inspired by farmland, calm water surfaces, and Jinshan’s coastal landscape, these gardens create a tranquil environment that encourages interaction with nature, reinforces community identity, and celebrates the enduring spirit of water-town living.
